David Sonnabend

David Sonnabend is Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatic Surgery at the University of Sydney and head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatic Surgery at Royal North Shore Hospital.

Prof Sonnabend was a founding member of the Australian and New Zealand Orthopaedic Research Society and inaugural president of the Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia. He is a corresponding member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Orthopaedic Science.

For nine years, Prof Sonnabend was also an editor of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. Prof Sonnabend’s research interests relate to musculo­skeletal biomechanics, tendon pathology and repair and the surgical treatment of arthritis. His reported series of 710 consecutive rotator cuff repairs is the largest published series to date. He has also authored or co-authored over 60 scientific publications, and numerous review articles and book chapters.

As well as being involved with research at SSRI, Prof Sonnabend is also involved in ongoing osteoarthritis and tendon healing research at the Raymond Purves Research Laboratories (Royal North Shore Hospital) and has been Director of the Bone and Joint Research Foundation since 2003. Prof Sonnabend has long been involved with fellowship training at Royal North Shore Hospital (predating the establishment of SSRI) and has personally supervised over 50 orthopaedic fellows. Now, as part of the SSRI faculty, Prof Sonnabend helps develop the surgical and research skills of new orthopaedic surgeons through his role as mentoring surgeon on Dr Young’s Sydney Shoulder Research Institute Fellowship and Dr Cass’ Sydney Shoulder Research Institute Clinical Fellowship programs.

As well as teaching while operating with Fellows, Prof Sonnabend also provides them with a fortnightly professorial tutorial which is unique to and an integral part of both Fellowship programs.
