Shoulder Elbow Society of Australia Biennial Conference
23-27 October 2024
Brisbane QLD
The 2024 Shoulder & Elbow Society of Australia Biennial Conference was held in Brisbane and welcomed international guests Professor Christian Gerber (Zurich – Switzerland), Lionel Neyton (Lyon – France), Ruth Delaney (Dublin – Ireland) and Francesco Franceschi (Rome – Italy) who shared technical tips and stimulated though-provoking discussion on shoulder and elbow pathology.
The Sydney Shoulder Research Institute maintained a strong presence at the conference. Dr Cass, Dr Young and Dr Hughes chaired sessions on cuff augmentation, shoulder instability, ACJ fracture and shoulder / elbow arthroplasty. Current fellows Rory Cuthbert and Anand Ashok-Kumar gave podium presentations on suture slippage in lateral row knotless cuff repair and long-term follow-up of c.acnes contamination in shoulder arthroplasty. Previous fellows Cameron Handford, Milos Spasojevic and Tom Clifton also presented on rural vs urban total shoulder replacement, mid-term follow-up of the Nexel total elbow arthroplasty and results of the tightrope cadaveric study for Grade V ACJ injury.
A highlight of the conference was the SSRI dinner at Alchemy Restaurant where stories about experiences on the fellowship were accompanied by several bottles of red wine into the early hours.
After the conference concluded, we were delighted to host Professor Gerber at Royal North Shore Hospital’s Bone Breakfast where he gave an illuminating talk on his journey as a surgeon scientist – which all began after a spinal injury curtailed his football career. Professor Gerber underlined the importance of continually learning from every patient we treat to facilitate “bench to bedside” translational research which has a real impact on patient outcomes.
