Visiting Fellows are typically early to mid-career orthopaedic surgeons from other countries who are keen to experience Australian orthopaedic surgery. These Fellows visit SSRI for between 6 and 12 months (longer by arrangement).
Observers, on the other hand, can be either early career orthopaedic surgeons or late stage medical students. Observers visit SSRI for shorter periods of between 2 and 6 months which often includes a term that satisfies a component of their training.
Generally, Visiting Fellows and Observers are not granted (and do not apply for) medical registration in Australia as their intention is not to work as an orthopaedic surgeon (or other medical practitioner) during their time here. Similarly, they do not register in nor do they take any local university coursework for credit. The majority of time is spent observing SSRI surgeons operating in the public and private hospital setting, as well as observing these surgeons consult in public hospital outpatient clinics and private rooms. Time is also spent attending educational and scientific meetings. Depending on their experience, abilities and length of time in Sydney, some Visiting Fellows are invited to contribute to research within either the public or private settings but this is on a voluntary basis and subject to availability only. Visiting fellows and Observers are responsible for securing their own funding for all travel and living expenses for the duration of their stay.
Visiting Fellowships are generally arranged between institutions (such as between SSRI and the surgeon’s home hospital or university). Observerships can be arranged likewise or by the individuals themselves if suitably qualified. That said, it is important to note that SSRI’s (and its agencies) credentialing requirements are the same as those for SSRI Fellowship appointments.
Application to visit or observe does not, in and of itself, guarantee the request will be granted as these coveted positions are only made available as scheduling permits and where it bears minimal impact on the training of our SSRI Fellows
Potential Visiting Fellows or Observers must make their enquiries with SSRI at least 12 to 18 months prior to their intended visit. Paperwork requirements include but are not limited to:
